• Ni Li presents new tropical cyclone damage functions using Wikimpacts 2.0 and CLIMADA at EGU 2026
  

  Ni Li (VUB Department of Water and Climate) will present a new set of tropical cyclone damage functions calibrated using the expanded Wikimpacts 2.0 database and the CLIMADA ensemble-of-strategies method at EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna.
  
  This study introduces Wikimpacts 2.0, a major expansion of the original Wikimpacts database, increasing documented hazard events from 2,928 to 7,538 across seven hazard types through the integration of non-English Wikipedia articles, multi-event pages, and structured tables/lists.
  
  For tropical cyclones, Wikimpacts 2.0 now represents the largest publicly available tropical cyclone damage dataset. Using 1,114 matched events with sub-national impact data from 2000–2024, the team recalibrates tropical cyclone damage functions using IBTrACS landfall records and CLIMADA’s LitPop exposure framework.
  
  Damage functions are calibrated at both national and sub-national scales, significantly improving local-scale tropical cyclone risk assessment and vulnerability modelling.
  
  This work demonstrates how open disaster databases, advanced event extraction, and CLIMADA’s ensemble-of-strategies approach can substantially strengthen climate risk and disaster loss modelling.
